Ugly pylons

Transpower probably underestimated the backlash it was going to get about its plan to build new transmission lines right up the Upper North Island. This issue isn’t going away.

Brian Rudman writes in his Herald column this morning:

Who in their right minds, wants more ugly pylons marching across farmland or the outskirts of suburbia? But if not pylons, then what? One of the worst aspects of this debate is that the state-owned enterprise is pushing a one-option solution, rubbishing alternatives, and warning if we dither, Auckland will be risking power cuts by mid- 2010. It’s hardly the ideal circumstances for informed debate.

He seems to be unaware of all the alternatives. Perhaps he didn’t catch Jeanette’s column in his paper back in January. Her alternatives try to do two things: build more generation close to Auckland and farther north, and reduce demand on cold winter afternoons.
