A reader, Michelle, pointed me to this story about Scottish rock band, Franz Ferdinand, providing music for a Green Party election broadcast in the UK. The broadcast, featuring the song “This Fire”, will offer a “nightmare vision” of the future if we let our environment be polluted.

Reports the Sunday Herald:

A remix of Franz Ferdinand’s song, This Fire, will accompany a young woman as she walks through a polluted, urban landscape. She is assaulted by neon signs, saying things like Eat GM Foods, New War Iran and Re-elect President Blair. As the band sing “this fire is out of control�, she is accosted by two sinister-looking policemen in dark glasses demanding her ID card. “Have a nice day,� says one of them sarcastically.

The band’s lead singer, Alex Kapranos, has previously given his support to a campaign for wind farms in Scotland. But his band, seen recently as the epitome of cool, has been unsuccessfully courted by political parties in the past.

Would be great if Kiwi bands got similarly involved in New Zealand’s election campaign, though one can understand why they might be reluctant to “get political”. After all, voters of all political persuasions are potential fans.
