Tracking hope

So, Green Room 004: Hope, a CD featuring a track by Nandor, was released this morning. It’s the final in a four-CD series aimed at raising awareness of social and environmental issues.

In 2002, Nandor’s first foray into music-as-politics was seen as novel. In 2003, Metiria’s words led to nervous giggles and raised eyebrows.

This year’s track (listen to it here) is called One Inity. The lyrics read in part:

Who benefits from silence
is who perpetuates the violence,
and if power tripping gives you the biggest hard-on
and if money is your religion,
I still can’t believe that your own grandchildren
have no place in your vision.
Those who deny, deride and outright lie
about the ecological breakdown we face
cannot replace
clean air
clean water
clean soil
and in the face of that enormity
I have Hope.

Nandor says the track is about distinguishing between hope and blind optimism. He says:

It’s simply saying: look, there is hope in the world, even if it doesn’t always look like it. But hope isn’t blind optimism, or running blindly through a field of daisies. To have real hope and a real sense of optimism means that we have to confront directly the enormous challenges we face. Hope comes from having a roadmap.
