Happy Frog Week
BTW, DOC have declared this to be Frog Week!. From their media release:
As Kermit would say, “It’s not easy being greenâ€?…
Ain’t that the truth!
…or in the case of New Zealand native frogs, it’s not easy being brown and green in a world full of disease, pesticides, predators and shrinking habitats. In common with frogs around the world, the ancient and unique species of this country are suffering population declines. Frog Week 2005, which takes place between October 24 and 30, is designed to raise awareness of New Zealand frogs, and of the hazards that threaten the survival of these special animals.
To mark the week, The Waikato Times reports today:
One of the world’s rarest and smallest amphibians is found only in the Greater Waikato –- but it’s in danger of being wiped out.
Which is almost understandable given it’s about the size of a 20c piece.
That’s even smaller than me!
But then I’m not sure about the another thing they report:
Last year Conservation Minister Chris Carter announced Doc would use frog-printing to identify and monitor the frogs. This research, where frog’s skin markings are photographed and recorded digitally for computer-readable identification, shows the frogs are making progress.
Given his concerns over face recognition technology, Keith might have something to say about that… ![]()

You will be delighted to know that Charlotte Wilson has just played Kermit’s song in “Upbeat!” on ConcertFM, in honour of Frog Week: and Frog??

Mind you, the pattern recognition thingo for Frogs would have worked a treat for Keith’s skin markings down in Newmarket the other day. I propose a trial to see if that would pass the Precautionary Principle test. Volunteers?
