Tagging I'm not much into, but graf art is cool. Livens up our boring urban spaces, adds colour, character and cool. Long live graffiti.

btw I've seen the graf in question and it looks even better in the context of the mournful face painted next to it. I think Rod would be stoked.

graffitti art is far preferable to the corporate pollution of billboards advocating consumption of products we no longer need nor want.

truly wonderful graffitti art happens when commercial sensitivities are subsumed to community as a whole, as a living breathing expression of a locality.

some of the best art I've seen in Wellington has been multi-screen spray art by the likes of Mephisto Jones, and the numerous anti-capitalist taggers in our city, speaking about war and corporate greed.

the Dowse Art gallery had it in one during the New Cool exhibition; Misery, from Auckland, as well as Illicit and Dawn Raid, have all grown from the graf-art foundation into thriving businesses catering to grassroots ideals.

Buy Local - support your local artists - and check out Thistle Hall in Welly on Dec 9 for fresh local art, looking for a christmas wrapping.

petermck:

You stated that: "In order to combat this vandalism, one needs to understand what motivates the people who disfigure our cities by graffiting over any surface that takes their fancy."

I feel/think that way about advertising billboards, but possibly more strongly than you do abour graffiti, because they disfigure our cities and countryside in a much more intrusive fashion.

I'd be interested in your opinion/feelings about billboards.

Who are you to put "art" in quotes? Why do you think art is only art if it stays within your staid little social mores? Who are you to proclaim what is and is not an appropriate forum, who are you to speak so confidently on behalf of Rod Donald, and why do you think people here would necessarily care about what he would or would not approve of? (oh, petermck says Rod wouldn't approve, there's a king-hit - you win).

So, what does motivate the people who "disfigure our cities by graffiting over any surface which takes their fancy"? Because by treating them all as one and the same, and smugly categorising all grafitti as non-art, you clearly have no clue at all.

I didn't miss the point, I made another one. I understood your point, I just thought it was bullshit. Evidence of another closed minded socially conservative liberal from ACT with a deep-set desire to control society in your own conventional image - a little bored (hmm, wonder why that would be?) and deciding to troll.

Anyway, why do you need to understand these tossers? I thought all you needed was zero tolerance and a guarantee that ACT would be the toughest on crime. Perhaps there is some vague hope for you if you do believe that it is more complicated than your leaders will ever admit.

If people want to mourn Rod Donald, then I have no problem with that. I understand how many people will miss him, and I believe he will be a huge loss for the greens and his frineds and his family. My points are are this.

1. If people want to mourn Rod - then it should be done by any means that is appropriate which does not include vandalising property (something Rod could not have approved of).
2. By posting graffiti this blog would encourage more graffiti (vandalism) of a similar vein. (again something Rod would not approve of).

The comment by Ari and Pip misses the point - so here it is a s clearly as I can make it - There are appropriate forums for grief but this is not one - and in any instance and perhaps most importantly - Rod Donald would not encourage vandalism of this nature (expecially since these vandals seek and strive for publicity for their “art.)

In order to combat this vandalism, one needs to understand what motivates the people who disfigure our cities by graffiting over any surface that takes their fancy. Obvoiusly those who runthis blog do not care about the vandalism that these tossers do to our cities and properties.

"Graffiti is vandalism. The people who graffiti property do it so that their works can be seen by many people. To give any level of publicity to this type of vandalism only encourages it more. Please do not give these destructive a-holes any more publicity than they already have"

Hmm... replace graffiti with commenting on blogs with nothing positive to say... ah, no, that wouldn't be very welcoming, would it...

Graffiti is indeed vandalism, but many people (mistakenly) believe it their only way to be heard. While it is destructive, it's nice to think that someone felt Rod's death was something important enough that it would warrant such a desperate message.

The interesting thing about that particular piece of graffiti is that the artist who did it clearly wrote Ron Donald to start with and then skillfully covered that up and changed it to Rod.

I would also agree that Rod would not have approved, because it uses paint from a spray can and so this a non-renewable resource and a waste of the energy required to make the can and put the paint in. I bet the paint is not biodegradable either. Greens should be doing their graffiti using non-toxic water-soluble paints using a paintbrush and carrying the paint around in an old jam jar.
