Norwegians going off whale too

Apparently it’s not just Japanese consumers who aren’t interested in eating whale meat. In the 2006 season, Norwegian whalers only harpooned about half of their quota of Minke whales, despite that quota being lifted last year. The low take is being attributed to rough seas and high fuel costs, but anti-whaling groups are also arguing that Norwegian consumers are losing interest in whale meat:

Whaling has a very high political priority in Norway but a low priority among citizens and among fishermen who don’t bother to go to the whaling grounds.

To their credit, Norwegian whalers aren’t insisting on killing the full quota whether there’s demand or not, so at least we’re not seeing meat stockpiles and whale meat being used for dog food and school lunches as we see in Japan.

I’ve got a silly question: does whale meat have omega3? (I suppose not since they are warm blooded mammals).
As for whale meat beiing used as dog food. Why don’t we process dead humans when they die (too fatty?)
    Henri

  2. eredwen Says:

We could just use the thin ones.

  3. eredwen Says:

Perhaps we could process all our “road kill”? It is usually young and tender.

  4. stuey Says:

I’d like to be buried at sea when I die - then I could feed the fishes.

  5. phil u. Says:

you could feed them now stuey…just get some goldfish…

“soilent green” fish food for fish farms for the “starving millions” ….

    now there’s an investment opportunity!

  10. phil u. Says:

    don’t tell stuey ..!..eredwen..!

he’ll be going and jumping into fish farm ponds..

you know how he is about ‘feeding the fishes’..!

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  11. phil u. Says:

and as for stueys’ desire ‘to feed the fishes’….

do you think he’ll get himself done in batter..beforehand..?

y’know..to try and correct..if only in some small way..

the karmic imbalances of all that battered fish he has eaten..?

(is it guilt that is driving this obsession/kink of his..?..doyathink..?)

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  12. eredwen Says:

    Phil,
No, not batter, but an edible coffin that floats for a while and then breaks down in sea water, surounding his delicious (for fish that is) cadaver with a fish’s equivalent of an apetizer before the main course.

OR … the coffin could have a built in depth charge which explodes at a certain depth, thus rendering the corpse and the (edible) coffin into small, fish-sized portions.

I think we are onto a winner here!

  13. phil u. Says:

how about sauces..?…we haven’t thought about sauces enough…

how about ’stuey-fingers’.?…(of course in batter..)

    phil(whoar.co.nz.)

(will he have a ‘use-by’ date..?..)

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  14. eredwen Says:

    Phil,

No, I don’t think batter is needed.

Stuey’s mortal remains, and those of the myriad of (Late) Greens who doubtless will follow his example, will be delicious (to fish) without enhancement, because of their previous healthy lifestyles and eating habits.

“Au naturel” will be the trend, (possibly, except for the “ecoutrement” of the edible, delicious-to-fish exploding coffins).

It sounds such a tempting way to recycle one’s “mortal coil” that
I already regret not being able to take part! (Sadly, the remains of my body, after its use by anatomy-learning Medical Students, will be full of toxic-to-fish preservatives. Perhaps after cremation its remaining ashes could safely fertilise a plant?)

hmm, I can’t quite see what all the fuss is about. Maybe once environmentally sound funerals are more commonplace, people will be less likely to make fun of those people who request an environmentally sound funeral. If you are looking for a “green” funeral, there is Living Legacies, http://www.livinglegacies.co.nz/

As to why I would like to be buried at sea, it is not out of guilt for eating too many fish suppers, it is more because I studied oceanography at uni.

  16. katie Says:

    Stuey;
morbid love of fish must have a grander sounding name than oceanography can provide ;p

…may I suggest a better option is to spend more time enjoying the ocean environment whilst alive… storms are a great opportunity to gather kelp for the garden and relish the winter/spring aspect of the seashore.

I do fully endorse the project that Living Legacies is involved in, especially considering the amount of toxins involved in creating your average coffin!
(glues, varnishes, sealants, fittings… plastic wreaths, ribbons, etc at funeral services, the list goes on…)

‘Burial at sea’ always has that faint whiff of piracy about it, too - any lingering Johny Depp fantasies lurking there, stuey? hehe… sorry, too many adolescent girls in my household, it’s been a recurring theme for weeks since the 2nd movie came out.

  17. phil u. Says:

you are priceless stuey..!…you’ve got me falling off my chair…

“..As to why I would like to be buried at sea, it is not out of guilt for eating too many fish suppers, it is more because I studied oceanography at uni…”

all no doubt said totally staight-faced…(possibly even in a slightly ’sniffy’/impatient manner)….and ..of course..with out any trace of irony..?

    as i said..priceless..!

    btw…i mastered in politics..

    following your rationale..

should i see if i can get my ashes sprinkled in the debating chamber..?

anyone else got any innovative university study/method of corpse disposal ideas/links/segues..?

    “morbid interest in fish”..indeed..!

ohh..!.. feck….!..you’ve made my day stuey..cheers..!

    phil(whoar)

btw..do you mind if i call you ‘fish-food’ from here on in..?

Well I studied computer science, so I suppose my spirit should be fed into the internet, to become part of the Matrix.

I also did some biochemistry (in its infancy way back then) so I suppose my genetic material could be recycled — No clones, thankyouverymuch, but perhaps chimeras of man/kiwi/frog?

  19. eredwen Says:

    ” … chimeras of man/kiwi/frog …”

I enjoy the way, that from time to time, a frogblog thread “descends” into a free flow of ideas.

I hope frog (and the whales) don’t mind too much. It’s just “Greens and friends” at play.

With all the worrying stuff happening on this planet, some light relief and a sense of togetherness with “others who care” is priceless … a now debased word meaning literally “beyond price” (and a concept that some fellow humans seem completely unable to understand, just as they seem unable to understand “Greens”.)

A personal THANK YOU to everyone!!!

    Now, where were we?

    Alistair was saying …

” so I suppose my genetic material could be recycled — No clones, thankyouverymuch, but perhaps chimeras of man/kiwi/frog?”

  22. phil u. Says:

and..um..seeing as you mention it…y’know..the ‘descent’..

just this morning i’ve done a piece on the ’stockholm syndrome’ currently gripping the green party…so there you go ..eh..?

    (could/should rattle some cages..)

and in further self-spruiking..soon you’ll be able to see daily vid-reports of my take on the days’ doings….hee-hee..!

these will hang off/around the daily take i do on local and global news…

and it’s really cool..’cos i was wrestling with the complexities of staging a major produuction daily news bulletin….

but now i’ve pared it back to its’ essentials…

and it’s extremely do-able….’cos it’s just ideas..interpretation of ideas..and quality of writing/presentation….and linking it back to what i’ve already written/cited earlier in the day…(mmm..!..warmm and toasty..!..)

i’m thinking about posting at 3 pm or 4 pm or 5pm..

    whaddayareckon..?

    woo-hoo..!

and it won’t be all serious…it will also be seriously frivolous…

    and games/competitions…!

i think the first game/competition will be loosly based on the old ‘”where’s wally/waldo(?)”…

    i thought i’d call it “where’s russell..?..”

Hey at the risk of steering the topic away from its lighthearted approach - have you all seen the latest about some of our marine mammal close to home?

    http://www.forestandbird.org.nz/mediarelease/2006/0829_andertonlegalth reatsealions.asp

Read the article linked at the bottom of the press release - scary stuff.

  24. eredwen Says:

    Absolutely “scary stuff”!

    Some random thoughts:

It is very sad (and increasingly dangerous) that “money”, and its pursuit, is regarded as more important than the diversity of life on this planet.

As far as Society is concerned it really is a case of “out of sight, out of mind”. If someone killed a nursing bitch and left her puppies to starve in mainland Aotearoa/NZ, that person would be prosecuted, and society would be “outraged”. Yet the domestic dog is certainly in no danger of extinction.

As a mother, I grieve for those hungry and confused sea lion pups.

As an inhabitant of this planet, I grieve for the impact that humans have had/are having on this planet, and think the best thing would be if Homo sapiens died out! … and yet I am aware that all life forms are temporary in the cosmic timeframe …

Now, back to the sealions … How can we help?

  25. F Says:

I’m in Japan right now. Down at the souvenier shop they have cans of whalemeat curry.

    >Now, back to the sealions … How can we help?

Well i would recommend signing the Forest and Bird petition (www.forestandbird.org.nz - currently has around 8000 signatures, needs 15000, so encourage all your friends and family to do the same). Why not write to the Minister of Fisheries, or Mfish and make some noise about it as well.
get stuck in. somebody’s got to.

  27. phil u. Says:

    yes..helping the sea lions/the/whales/the oceans…

    hey..!..here’s an idea/thought…!

y’know how you all go “..ew..!..lookat them..they are eating whales..!.
    how gross/cruel/unkind…!…”

well..at the same time you are doing that…i am pointing at most of you going…”..ew..!..look at them..!…they are eating just about everything else..!…how gross/cruel/unkind..?

the hypocricies/double-standards around this one are jaw-dropping..eh..?

so..(ahem)..for those looking for solutions to this conundrum..start close to home..and stop chowing down on all those other species of sentient beings..?

    now..that’d be nice..!..eh..?..
