The freedom to sing

There are gangs other than the type we fuss about here in New Zealand.  Such as for instance the Mafia. The Mafia does not stereotypically wear patches so they are harder to use as an easy target for the type of ‘tough on law and order‘ talk Chester Burrows, Michael Laws and Phil Goff enjoy. But, not to be deterred, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has found a way.  He has just banned jailed mafia prisoners from singing.  In the land of opera that must a serious breach of civil freedoms indeed!

Here’s a potential Italian gang member decked out in black insignia and leather:

mafioso? or just well dressed?

He won’t be allowed in Wanganui!

A few years ago, The Economist declared Berlusconi “unfit to rule” and the latter sued for defamation. Recently a court in Milan rejected the defamation suit.

So it seems there’s at least some parts of the Italian judiciary that seem to function OK!
