Peters: Turn off, tune out, drop out

Winston the Blogster has had enough of the media. He suggests you

Leave your TV or radio switched off, save that money you’d otherwise spend on a newspaper.

Vote uninformed? No if you must know what’s going on he gives further advice:

Or, if you’re interested in politics and want to make an informed decision this election, go to your local candidates’ meetings. Read the parties’ policies on their websites. Reclaim this election period for yourselves.

It’s a shame for him that Christine Dann pointed out in the Press yesterday in an article on how to make an informed vote, that:

National Party and New Zealand First supporters who want to pick out the top performers will find it impossible to do so from the information on the websites of these parties, however. The National site is very disappointing, with only very recent (last two months) speeches and releases for each MP. Plus the speeches are the ones they give outside of parliament, not their contribution to law-making. The New Zealand First site also ignores parliamentary speeches, and it is impossible to track what each MP has been doing outside of parliament from the site without opening each speech to see who gave it, and when and when it was given.

Incidentally Dann also rates the other parties websites for accessibility of information too. But if you want to shortcut all that research and hard work you could also try theyworkforyou.co.nz, where our favourite word conservationist Bob Clarkson has upped his output yet again; 65 words since the 3rd of July.

Yeah, but Bob Clarkson lost interest from Day 1. His only reason for being there was to try to get Winston Peters out (which is, I guess, a pretty valid reason).

Bob didn’t even want to be an MP, and didn’t perform as one - his enormous left testicle, it seems, got in the way of that!

Go Winny: the only party that questions the cost benefit of immigration (ie infrastructure goes on rates and developers and real estate agents make all the money.

Frog, I don’t think the late Dr Timothy Leary should be mocked, even in parody, as your blog title does!!!

  5. Kevyn Says:

toad, Any quotation that comes to symbolize an iconic moment ceases to belong to its original author. It belongs to society. Thus frog is mocking an aspect of society, not Leary.

And there was me trying to mock Winston.

” the I MiEV uses a single 47 kW motor to drive both rear wheels instead of four in-wheel electric motors. The car has a top speed of 130 km/h

i MiEV is the third EV of MMC’s MiEV series. Based on the i minicar platform, i MiEV replaces the conventional engine and fuel tank with a lithium-ion battery system, motor, inverter and other EV components in the rear-midship layout.”

Extracted from an item in http://www.republican.co.nz which goes some way to explaining why Winston is right…

New Zealand First “a socially conservative and nationalist party…”

[edit: Geoff that post is tooo long so I’ve cut it short sorry! Can you just provide a link the full article rather than reproducing the whole thing?]

“Nationalism doesn’t have to be negative. It doesn’t have to be directed against some other race or nation. In fact a purely negative expression of nationalism can not endure. People will only go on supporting a national entity when it provides them with a true sense of community. They need to believe that the nation will give them moral and material support, care for them in old age, and impart meaning and value to their lives.

and nations that are comfortable are less likely to make war (eg Sweden)…. ie not overpopulated with space for residence to grow veges , do up vintage cars and grow giant pumpkins.

“Winston’s “nationalismâ€? most obviously finds positive expression in the way he champions the interests of the aged. There may be a large element of political opportunism, but the fact remains that way in which it cares for its aged people is a litmus test for the well-being of any social
entity. There are the occasional snide remarks made about Peters’ grey constituency, but that is as far as it goes. Within the existing political system, appeals to interest groups are deemed to be a legitimate political strategy, and no one in the political firmament has the audacity to suggest
that the aged or the young should be denied the right to a political champion.”

old fogeys were around when the plod photos were taken: when Queenston was a holiday town and people only lived in a remote seaside spot because that’s where they wanted to live not to add to a propiteh portfolio.

“But the National, Labour, and ACT parties have done an about turn. They now concede that outside forces (specifically global capital and the “international communityâ€?) can dictate both the economic and the geo-political direction of the New Zealand state. This decision is deemed to
    be “pragmatic and “realist.

ah yes Bailey’s are off to Dubai looking for buyers for our coastal land etc…. (God Bless Them  )

and the Greens wouldn’t go near immigration…. witness the fall of the campgrounds.
